What needs to happen for solving the Pakistan-Afghanistan crisis?

Mr Humayun Gauhar makes a very strong case in favor of getting rid of the primary cancerous cells that are at the root of everything that is wrong with stability and security of Pakistan and Afghanistan vis-a-vis the USA. He has correctly pointed out the early growth period as the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by the erstwhile USSR. That invasion or occupation by the Soviet troops itself was triggered by America's involvement in the territory a few months earlier during the Carter presidency, which sucked in the USSR as part of a very calculated move that was formulated by none other than the greatest geo-strategist of our time Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinki. So, in essence, the USA used Pakistan and the entire Muslim world (esp. the Afghan Mujahideen - soon to become a dirty word in the American-English language) to defeat its mortal enemy - the Soviets. The process led not only to the dismemberment of the former Soviet regime but also to unchecked infiltration of drugs, arms and crimes in Pakistan, which are sure recipes for dismembering any country unless checked sternly and uncompromisingly. Today, Pakistan finds itself as a failed state with the north-west region behaving more like a sovereign territory. [See this author's book:

There is no doubt that only Pakistan's enemies (like India) benefit from such a scenario. The U.S. use of Pakistani bases for launching attacks against the so-called 'terrorist' dens both inside and outside Pakistan had and would only continue to making things worse, pushing the country into a corner of no return.

Like Mr. Gauhar, I believe a short term solution (followed by well-thought out long-term programs) lies in finding a compromise with the Taliban. I am told by a top UN official working inside Kabul for the last several years that political solution is what the EU and UN has been preaching for the last few years, unfortunately, with very little success because of America's unfathomed arrogance, which still believes that there is a military solution to the Afghanistan problem. In that arrogance, the USA also forgets that the carrot and stick policy works mostly for donkeys, and no t intelligent human beings. The sooner the Obama administration learns it the better it is for the regional security and stability.
